Seth Walks Lake District
There's always another peak! 18 May 2004
There is something about the horizons and peaks of hill-walking that always manages to convince us that the peak we are walking up will be the summit.
Rather appropriately, hill-walking is being used as an analogy for the relationship of achieving goals to happiness - i.e. if we keep postponing our happiness until we reach the peak we will be faced with - you guessed it - another peak!
I'm sure we'll hear and discuss more about this later.
There is something rather satisfying, though, about reaching a sub-peak and knowing that it is one more level reached and a stage up from which to get a better quality of view. As we all know though, the nirvana, that ultimate peak is the one right at the highest altitude where all the other peaks for miles around are lower down, and there are no more 'just this little bit further's' to conquer.
As it happens, our hill-walking is fairly enjoyable and achieveable by anyone with a modest level of fitness (its also, actually, optional). Once we get underway and into a rhythm, walking becomes a flow. One of the keys we aim to promote here is one of unity and inter-group support and encouragement and it was nice that we rested whenever anyone needed to. I also enjoyed the 'flat-walking' days, too.
